Which instrument did you learn first?

Do you think you made the right choice?

What would you recommend to someone new to music? Would you recommend your first instrument as the one they should start off with?

I learned piano first, starting when I was 7 (which is quite old nowadays -- my son started at the age of 5). Then I moved on to guitar, bass and drums eventually.
first instrument that i learn to play is a clarinet. its really hard to blow (which is it not really blow but u just put little effort in ur air blowing.something like that) haha

i hate to play it because its hard to be creative in clarinet.so its hard to play any types of genres as my favourite is metal.so i dont think its a right choice.

for someone who new to music,i would really recommend a piano or a keyboard (keyboard is better because you can play many types of songs and lots of effect to play there) because it trains both of our fingers.so,when you switch to guitar or bass it will be easier for u to practice swipe-ing or tapping or anything because guitar and piano/keyboard aren't many different.
I first learned guitar, at age 17. Had to hide it from my parents. Learned everything I could from watching others, and Mel Bay books.
I wish I'd have learned to play the piano first. I would recommend to others that their instrument should match the sound that makes their brain smile.
agreed with u...james hetfield from metallica play piano first before turn to guitar
when i was 5 my uncle gave me a mini acoustic guitar that suits my size of course but i didn't pursue learning guitars do i focus on vocals.. when i reached the age of 15 i was fascinated by my friends who play guitar so i decided to learn guitar.. gladly, when i enter the church, there was this pastor who thought me everything that i know.. :D
first instrument i learned to play was the guitar at the age of 14. i took up classical lessons when i was 15 and had to stop after a year because i had to move to another place. since then i just explored new techniques and styles on my own and by jamming with other musicians..
Good point about starting off with classical first.

All my kids are very musical, they all learned piano first, but now one of them wants to learn guitar. Do you think it would be good for them to learn classical guitar first, before trying out other styles?
hi graham, yup i think classical is a good starting point as it tackles a lot of things like scales, arpeggios, and techniques like hammer ons and pull offs. it is also a good training for getting the hands to loosen up. then from then on, he/she can explore to other styles once they had a good grip on the techniques and scales. :)

its really good to know about kids that have inclination towards music :)
agreed!
im metal lover. but i always fascinate when i see somebody play classical.it makes us creative in creating a music.
Learning classical guitar first would be a huge advantage for the beginners. One good step to take would be to keep taking classical guitar lessons while learning other styles.
Acoustic guitar... :)
